1. Fuel Your Body With Complex Carbs
Quality carbs, meaning complex carbs and not sugars or starches, are your body’s most important source of energy. Read Nutrition, Energy, and Mood to learn more.
2. Early to Bed, Early to Rise
Your energy levels are powerfully tied to your circadian rhythm, which is, essentially, the biorhythm that dictates when you wake up and go to sleep. Check out Stay Energized Naturally for more on how your circadian rhythm works. In a nutshell, human beings are meant to wake up around sun rise and go to sleep about 15 hours later. No matter how much we would like to, we simply can’t divorce our body’s energy rhythm from the rising and setting of the sun. What this means is that a 9:30pm to 6:30am sleep schedule is optimal for both energy levels and general health. The closer you can get to this schedule, the better you’ll feel.
3. Run Intervals
The human body is meant to move in brief, high intensity burst followed by periods of recovery. Exercising this way promotes higher energy levels (as well as weight loss). Three or four cardio sessions per week with two to six minute bursts of activity followed by periods of full recovery is a great way to increase energy levels. Your free ReEvolution Fitness Action Plan includes an individualized interval cardio program.
4. Fill Your Diet with Healthy Fats
Omega 3 fats (found in cold water fish, or available as supplements), olive oil, and saturated fats in moderation are all wonderful sources of energy. To up your intake of Omega 3 fat, eat Alaskan salmon one or two times per week, and light tuna every once in a while. Alternatively, supplement with fish oil in the morning before breakfast. Work some saturated fat into your diet by adding a little organic butter to your breakfast. This will help your stay full and feel energized throughout the morning. Eat olive oil with just about everything.
5. Avoid Energy Drinks Like the Plague
Energy drinks are seriously damaging to health. Worse, they’re addictive. They give you a rapid burst of energy by lashing your adrenal glands, and, when they wear off, leave your body exhausted and needing another chemical high just to feel normal.
