6. Eat a lot of veggies and a bit of fruit
Veggies supply your body with critical vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that nourish all of your tissues including your skin. In addition, the fiber in veggies is a powerhouse for cleaning toxins out of your body. Fruit can also be wonderfully nourishing to skin, but most people should limit themselves to two or three servings per day. Fruits like berries, apples, and pears, which are less sugary than other fruits, can be consumed a bit more often.
7. Nourish Your Skin from Without
Instead of expensive moisturizers concocted from strange combinations of plant chemicals and sometimes artificial chemicals, why not treat your skin with an inexpensive, all natural, nourishing moisturizer that works wonderfully and has been used in some cultures for millennia? This miracle moisturizer is none other than extra virgin olive oil. Strange though it may sound, olive oil is almost as good for the outside of your body as it is for the inside. Olive oil is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, and inflammation is the main cause of skin aging. It is also wonderfully moisturizing. In addition, it has anti-bacterial properties, and bacterial overgrowth is a major factor in breakouts. Rub a bit into your skin at night before bed. In a few weeks, we bet your skin feels and looks healthier.
8. Keep Your Sun Exposure Moderate.
A little bit of sun light is actually good for your skin. But excessive sun exposure ages skin fast in addition to increasing your risk for several forms of skin cancer. If you’re planning on tanning outside, try to limit exposure to 15-20 minutes per side if the sun is strong. If you’re going to be outside all day, wear protective clothing and be sure not to stay in the sun for hours at a time. Sun block may help prevent sunburn, but there’s no good evidence that it prevents skin cancer.
9. Eat Organic Yogurt, and Consider a Probiotic
The health of your gut is almost as important to your skin health as the health of your liver. A healthy gut depends on healthy bacteria. High quality yogurts (organic if possible) are a great way to keep your gut swimming in healthy bugs. Look for a yogurt that has both acidophilus and bifidus cultures. In addition to eating yogurt, consider taking a good probiotic (a supplement supplying healthy bacteria). Bio K, Natren, and Metagenics all make good probiotics.
10. Exfoliate Twice per Week
Exfoliation is great for skin health. It clears away dead cells that can make skin dull and clog pores, leading to breakouts. In addition, it stimulates skin cells to produce collagen, which keeps your skin firm and healthy. But many people exfoliate too aggressively or too often. Overly aggressive exfoliation leads to inflamed, damaged skin. If you have oily skin, try an abrasive all-natural facial scrub once or twice per week. If your skin is more sensitive, consider a mild exfoliant, like a skin wash containing alpha hydroxy acid, which chemically exfoliates skin.
