Action Steps:
1. Choose one activity a week to practice visualizing in your brain.
Many people are skeptical of visualization, or they are averse to trying it because it just seems too out there. We could encourage you to read all of the studies on how amazingly powerful visualization is. But study results are never as powerful as our own experience. Start incorporating visualization into your life with one activity – shooting free throws, singing, dancing, anything. Commit to a month of mental practice, 5 minutes per day, and watch your skills improve.
2. Prepare for an Encounter with Visualization, and Watch How Well it Goes
Maybe it’s that meeting with your boss. Or finally asking that girl or guy out on a date. Or confronting your neighbor about their loud music. In any event, rehearse the encounter going the way you want it to go in your head ahead of time. This will create a script in your brain, which it will be easy for you to follow when it comes time for the actual encounter. As a result, you’ll enter the encounter with confidence and direction. Further, the other person will tend to play off of your signals, and fall into the script in your brain. All great salespeople use this technique. The rest of us should too.
3. Incorporate some visualization into a workout
Get on an ellipse machine or a stationary bike. You’re going to be keeping your eyes closed, so it’s important to choose a piece of equipment that you can easily stay on. Dive into a ReEvolution Cardio workout (available as part of your free ReEvolution Fitness Action Plan), and during one of the sprints, close your eyes and picture yourself running on a cliff next to the coast. The wind is at your back and the view is majestic. You feel like you’re on top of the world. You don’t even really notice that you’re out of breath. Want to bet that you can go longer and harder with the picture in your mind? We bet that you’ll even get your heart rate up higher. Then, when it comes to the rest interval, close your eyes and picture the opposite – chilling on a beach in paradise – and feel your body relax.
