Supplements
You’ll want to start taking supplements – in addition to the vitamin C you’ve been taking - as soon as you start eating solid food. First, find a high quality multi-vitamin. Look for a multi containing "food state" nutrients, which are easier to absorb. Take additional Vitamin C as instructed, plus 800 IU of vitamin E once per day on top of your multivitamin. Like Vitamin C, Vitamin E is also a mega anti-oxidant which helps protect cells from the toxins liberated during detox. Take your multivitaim and vitamin E with a meal you cook with a little bit of olive oil to aid absorption.
You should also buy some flax seed oil from a health food store fridge and use it as a salad dressing. Flax oil isn’t as good a source of omega 3 as fish oil, but during detox, you don’t want to consume animal products. Switch to Nordic Naturals or Metagenics fish oil after coming off the program.
Further, you’ll want to supplement with Milk thistle. Milk thistle contains Silymarin- a group of bioflavinoids with loads of antioxidant, antitoxin properties. Milk thistle is a available at most health food stores. Take 1 to 1½ grams of Milk thistle per day. In addition to Milk thistle, you’ll also want to take powdered Dandelion root. Dandelion is rich in taraxacum, another compound believed to support liver function. Take 3 to 4 grams of Dandelion root per day.
Beyond protecting your body from the damaging effects of toxins, you need to take a supplement that will actually bind toxins and take them out of your body. The best two supplements of this type are charcoal and bentonite clay. Both are highly absobent and suck up toxins effectively, allowing you to excrete them more easily. For this program we recommend taking bentonite since it does a good job of clearing harmful microbes from the GI tract. A great added benefit of detoxing is that your immune system, free from the buden of sanitizing the food you eat, tuns it's attention to harfum bacteria and fungi hanging around you intestines. Almost everyone has a few pernicious bugs in their guts, and literally millions of people suffer from serious chronic infections of the gut with harmful bacteria and yeast. Buy a liquid form of Bentonite (the powder is horrid to deal with) such as Sonny’s no. 7 or Great Plains Bentonite Detox, and consume around 3 ounces (a lot more than the bottle will say) before bed. Bentonite will bind up everything in its way, including any food or supplements you’ve taken within the previous 2-3 hours, so shoot to finish all meals/supplements (except tea, which absorbs fast) 3 hours before bed.
The last supplement you should be sure to include in your detox program is Alpha Lipoic Acid. Another mega anti-oxidant, Alpha Lipoic Acid is both fat and water soluble. This means it can protect tissues in pretty much every system throughout your body. Consume ½ to 1 grams of Alpha Lipoic Acid per day during detox.
Probiotics (healthy bacteria) can also be a great aid to detox programs. Natren’s Healthy Trinity is a good choice available at most health food stores. Take one first thing in the AM on an empty stomach. Don’t include cayenne pepper in the lemon water you drink just after taking probiotics – it will kill the bacteria before they reach the gut. Supplement Ovierview:
Phase One and Two:
Vitamin C: Crystals with rosehips or bioflavinoids – 1/8 teaspoon with liquid throughout the day up to as much as 20 grams (a whole, whole lot) per day.
Phase Two Only:
Vitamin E: 800 IU per day once with a meal
Milk Thistle: 1 to 1½ grams of milk thistle split over two meals.
Dandelion Extract and Tea – 3-4 grams of powdered dandelion split over three meals plus 3 or 4 glasses of dandelion tea per day – also try Echinacea tea
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) – ½ to 1 gram per day split over 2 meals
Bentonite – 3 oz before bed
Flax oil – 1 to 3 oz on salads/cooked veggies
Probiotics – One healthy trinity first thing in the morning
