Do you want to lose 10lbs? Get a six pack? Improve your overall shape and tone? Or train to improve your health and have more energy? Or maybe it's sports that are your motivation and you want to run faster, jump higher, or hit harder. A smart exercise program tailored to your needs is a must for achieving all of these goals. And ReEvolution is all about getting you where you want to be as efficiently as possible by showing you how to work with your body. But before we focus in on tailoring a program to your specific goals, we need to set down some basic principles that should form the cornerstone of any exercise program.
1. Less is More: Emphasize Efficiency
Unless you are training to be an endurance athlete, long grueling workouts are not really good for anything. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscular development, or improving performance, you’ll be best served by keeping your workouts under an hour. The human body responds much better to high intensity training than to long duration training. So if you want to get a hard workout, emphasize intensity rather than duration. If you follow the workouts we provide (get a personalized weight training and cardio program with your free ReEvolution Fitness Action Plan) we’ll take care of the timing for you. If you’re following your own program, budget at most 50 minutes for both weights and cardio (less if you’re just getting started), with an extra 5 minutes for a warm up and 5 to 10 minutes to stretch afterwards.
Working out more than an hour at a time (overtraining) depletes your body of resources so that it can’t recover efficiently. It also damages joints, creates inflammation, and generally undermines health (If you need to do endurance training for sports, read Training for Sports). The changes that exercise creates in your body - making you leaner, stronger, faster, or more explosive, take place during the recovery period after a workout, not during a workout. Since overtraining leaves your body unable to recover fully from your workout, you end up getting inferior result for more work. Training the ReEvolution way – by working with your body and emphasizing intense, efficient workouts, rather than long, grueling workouts - gets you to your goals more quickly and with less time invested.
