One of the hardest things about changing your life is finding the motivation to get started, and then stay the course. Most of us are aware of things we can do to make our lives better – eat healthier food, get more exercise, work harder in school or at our jobs etc… But somehow even though we know that we would be happier, healthier, and more productive if we made these changes, we still aren’t motivated to.
Part of the reason that it is so hard for us to make positive changes in our lives is that many of our bad behavior patterns are habit forming. Sugary junk foods, snack chips, and other unhealthy foods are actually chemically addictive, and the more of them we eat, the more we crave them. A pattern of not exercising, and instead watching TV or doing something else passive gets harder and harder to break as we get further and further out of shape, making exercise seem like more and more of a challenge. When it comes to work or school, the further behind we get, or the more we fail to achieve, the more it saps our motivation to try in the future.
Breaking these negative patterns requires a bit of knowledge and a bit of inspiration. Knowledge is required because the better we understand how our minds and bodies work, the more we can take control. For instance, understanding how certain foods send our appetite out of control by destabilizing blood sugar and creating chemical changes in our brains can help us avoid these foods and make healthier choices, nipping overeating in the bud (see Controlling Appetite and Cravings for more).
Understanding how our bodies respond to exercise, and how little exercise it actually takes to start making positive changes in our bodies and lives can help us get on the road to a more active, healthy lifestyle (see Getting Started with Exercise). Understanding how to learn and work efficiently can make obstacles at school or work seem less intimidating (check out Maximizing Memory and Work Less, Accomplish More).
